Repairs/Soldering
Repairing a chain involves the process of soldering. The solder used is an alloy (which is a mixture) of a metal the same quality as the chain, and other metals, which melt at a lower temperature than the chain. The solder is melted to hold a link in position, without damaging the surrounding links, as this cools it hardens and forms a strong bond. A point to note- if the item has broken through wear and tear there may well be other weak areas, we can only guarantee the links we repair, please point this out to the customer. We take a digital photograph of every chain that comes in for repair so that we have a record of the location of the break,
(See the section on digital photography at the bottom of the page)

Extensions/Reductions Most chains can be extended (silver, gold- yellow and white,
9ct, 18ct and platinum) either with the exact chain or a very
close match. The chain is cut and the new piece soldered into
the original chain. If the item is graduated or has a patterned
section ,such as an I.D. plate, a piece of chain is added
to both sides of the clasp to maintain the symmetry. Likewise,
for a reduction of this type of chain, an equal mount is removed
from either side of the clasp.
Findings- these are separate parts of a chain that
provide the means to connect the two ends of a chain, a way to attach pendants or charms to a chain or safety
chains. A safety chain is the extra, usually finer, chain that is attached
either side of the clasp as a precaution should the clasp break.
Jointed Link- is a more complex link that has a round tube at
the end and this is connected to the next link by a rivet
( this is a thin wire made from the same metal as the chain)This
type of link is normally used on Tennis Bracelets (see pic.).The
whole joint is checked and either the whole section replaced
or just the broken section. As this type of repair is more
expensive please send in for an estimate. A point to note
if the item has broken through wear and tear there may well
be other weak areas, we can only guarantee the links we repair
Gate Bracelet- these are repaired by either removing a worn gate
(the gates are the horizontal bars)or replacing a rivet( the vertical bar holding the gate together) see pic.
A point to note if the item has broken through wear and tear there may well be other weak areas, we can only guarantee
the links we repair, please point this out to the customer.
Digital Photography - Every item that comes into the workshop is photographed using
a digital camera before it is repaired. The image is stored
by us so that in the event of the item breaking again we can
establish if it is a new break. These images can be printed
out if necessary.
